A while back (read: a few months ago), after 300 ‘smocks’ and 13 exhibition shows, Andrea Zittel (after speaking with us members) decided it was time to archive “Smockshop” as a project. I missed it terribly and was thrilled when Andrea rounded us up again and introduced a new version of a Smockshop style project. She explained the idea of a panel and her work with panels, and invited us to make our own panels. For now we are calling ourselves “The Group Formerly Known as Smockshop“. We’ve added a few members over the last couple months to round out and diversify a bit, and have a an entirely different set of rules that brilliantly and completely corallates to Andrea’s body of work, and Smockshop as an entity. Everything must be this panel shape. Everything must also be something functional.
Members are making everything from clothing to duvet covers to tables, bags, blankets and other random things. I’ve been making cozy sewn panels that are hooded scarves, regular scarves and neck warmers. All with hand dyed and/or reflective material. Here’s a couple photos
We’ve had three sales so far. The first was at the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine. Then we were at High Desert Test Sites annual Art Swap Meet in Joshua Tree, and then as a part of the event “Design Loves Art” at the Pacific Design Center here in LA. Next Month we will be down in Palm Springs at ACE Hotel. Please come check us out if you are in the area
